Anthropic’s popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code, is now available as a web and iOS app, a move that expands the tool beyond its command-line origins to compete more directly with browser-based tools from Google and OpenAI.
Coding in the cloud: The move frees Claude Code from its terminal-only roots. Developers can now connect their GitHub repositories and hand off coding jobs through a browser, letting the tool tackle several projects at once—handling bug fixes, routine updates, and answering questions about a project's architecture. A companion iOS app lets developers monitor progress or kick off small jobs on the go.
The coding arms race: The launch escalates the competition in the AI coding assistant market. Claude Code has already seen major adoption, with TechCrunch reporting its user base has grown 10 times since its launch in May.
Sandboxed for safety: Each coding session runs in an "isolated sandbox environment with network and filesystem restrictions," and a secure proxy manages all Git interactions to keep the tool confined to authorized code.
By moving to the browser, Anthropic is making its powerful developer tool more accessible, betting that convenience can win over developers who live outside the command line.
Also on our radar: The push for AI coding assistants isn't without debate, as one recent study found some engineers were actually slower when using them. While Anthropic is emphasizing security, it's an ongoing challenge, as the company previously admitted another feature "may put your data at risk." Looking ahead, the tool's capabilities are set to expand, with documentation pointing to a feature that will allow it to pull context from external sources like Google Drive and Figma.
